SUMMARY:Les Filles de Illighadad w/ Abdou Kambaye & Buffalo Nichols
DESCRIPTION:$10 adv // $12 door\nDoors 7:00pm // Show 8:00pm\nLes Filles are all from Illighadad\, a secluded commune in central Niger\, far off in the scrubland deserts at the edge of the Sahara. The village is only accessible via a grueling drive through the open desert and there is little infrastructure\, no electricity or running water. But what the nomadic zone lacks in material wealth it makes up for deep and strong identity and tradition. The surrounding countryside support hundreds of pastoral families\, living with and among their herds\, as their families have done for centuries.\nThe sound that defines rural Niger is a music known as “tende.” It takes its name from a drum\, built from a goat skin stretched across a mortar and pestle. Like the environs\, tende music is a testament to wealth in simplicity\, with sparse compositions built from a few elements\, vocals\, handclaps\, and percussion. Songs speak of the village\, of love\, and of praise for ancestors. It is a music form dominated by women. Collective and communal\, tende is tradition for all the young girls of the nomad camps\, played during celebrations and to pass the time during the late nights of the rainy season.\nIn the past years\, certain genres of Tuareg music have become popular in the West. International acts of “desert blues” like Tinariwen\, Bombino\, and Mdou Moctar have become synonymous with the name “Tuareg.” But guitar music is a recent creation. In the 1970s young Tuareg men living in exile in Libya and Algeria discovered the guitar. Lacking any female vocalists to perform tende\, they began to play the guitar to mimic this sound\, replacing water drums with plastic jerrycans and substituting a guitar drone for the vocal call and response. The exiled eventually traveled home and brought the guitar music with them. In time\, this new guitar sound came to eclipse the tende\, especially in the urban centers. If tende is a music that has always been sung by woman\, the Tuareg guitar was its gendered counterpart\, and Tuareg guitar music is a male dominated scene.\nFatou Seidi Ghali\, lead vocalist and performer of Les Filles is one of the only Tuareg female guitarists in Niger. Sneaking away with her older brother’s guitar\, she taught herself to play. While Fatou’s role as the first female Tuareg guitarist is groundbreaking\, it is just as interesting for her musical direction. In a place where gender norms have created two divergent musics\, Fatou and Les Filles are reasserting the role of tende in Tuareg guitar. In lieu of the djembe or the drum kit\, so popular in contemporary Tuareg rock bands\, Les Filles de Illighadad incorporate the traditional drum and the pounding calabash\, half buried in water. The forgotten inspiration of Tuareg guitar\, they are reclaiming its importance in the genre and reclaiming the music of tende.

SUMMARY:Elizabeth Moen
DESCRIPTION:FREE SHOW!\nDoors 5pm // Show 7pm\nWith a sultry and intoxicating voice\, Elizabeth Moen lures you in. Paired with introspective lyrics that echo both bitter and sweet\, her music will captivate you then stay with you. “Moen is one of those rare artists whose voice\, from the first moment you hear it\, consumes your entire being\, doing away with all previous thoughts and concerns\, and leaving you short of breath (The Culture Trip).”\nOn her sophomore LP A Million Miles Away\, Moen tackles the complexities that coincide with the basic need for growth. At points lighthearted and somber\, and even wry\, her lyrics mirror what it’s like to be alive: to wake up each day and attempt to balance the myriad of emotions that go along with being human. In “Triple Scoop” this all perfectly comes together in relation to the age-old problem of sweet\, melting ice cream meeting concrete (“Triple scoop sorbet splattered on the sidewalk / Bit of cherry pie hanging off your lip / Why wipe it away\, it’s just you and me talking? You’re the cherry on top of my double chocolate chip”). Throughout the album’s eight songs\, you are reminded that it’s possible (and ok!) to feel broken and carefree\, nostalgic and hopeful\, to be utterly content but still have an incredible sense of longing.\nHailing from the small town of Vinton\, Iowa located in the middle of the heartland\, Moen taught herself how to play guitar as a teenager. It was peer pressure that caused her to write her first song and shortly thereafter\, she immersed herself in the writing community of Iowa City while finishing up her studies in French and Spanish at the University of Iowa. Inspired by a mix of modern artists such as Alabama Shakes\, Sharon Van Etten\, Angel Olsen and Lake Street Dive (who she has supported)\, and older influences like Stevie Nicks and Joni Mitchell\, Moen isn’t locked into a single style.\nOn A Million Miles Away her songs shift fluidly; Opener “Red” and “Best I Can Do” portray the soulful side of her voice while “Triple Scoop” and “Matilda” recall folky\, summer pop. “Don’t Say I” and “Bad to Myself” pull in heavier tones\, augmented by her 1968 Gibson ES-340\, while the final tracks\, “Time is a Shitty Friend” and “Planetarium\,” act as closing arguments for the album. The two tracks encapsulate aspects of each preceding track\, at times both heavy and soft – equal parts whimsy (“Cuz I’m high and I’m reading about stars and shit”) and sadness (“…and it’s feeding / My thoughts about us together in some other universe”)\, while the echo of a longing to be “a million miles away” plays out. \nA Million Miles Away follows Moen’s 2016 (self-titled EP) and 2017 (That’s All I Wanted LP) releases that took her on tour throughout the Midwest and Western United States alongside Europe. During this time she has acted as direct support for Lake Street Dive\, Margaret Glaspy\, Lucy Dacus\, Becca Mancari\, Houndmouth\, William Elliott Whitmore (featured on her 2017 LP)\, Lissie\, Buck Meek and has had her music placed in films including the Netflix original movie “Candy Jar.” In support of her new album\, Moen embarked on her first national headlining tour with dates in major cities including Chicago\, New York City\, Los Angeles\, San Francisco\, Portland\, Denver\, and Nashville.\nReleased September 1\, Moen’s new album is a testament to its theme: growth. A Million Miles Away is a moving\, passionate exploration of internal and external change. In Moen’s own words\, “the base of the eight tracks revolves around the idea that there needs to be and will be growth. That can be for someone you love\, for yourself\, for a new relationship\, or for closure from an old one. I’ve grown a lot writing these. I hope that these songs will make you feel that way or another too.”

They have been humbled by their success and performing with acts that include Blind Melon\, Blue October\, Candlebox\, The Gufs\, and many more. While Ade and Adamek do most of the songwriting\, it’s the band’s creative spark and sonic diversity that are the driving force behind their sound.Well-Known Strangers grew out of a 15+ year friendship between Ade and Adamek. Then\, after performing at a mutual friend’s wedding in May 2014\, the two discussed the possibility of a music collaboration and began seeking out talent.  In February 2015\, Well-Known Strangers were born.  Their name comes from the idea that they were all individually “well-known” in the local music scene when they got together\, but on a personal level some of them were “strangers” to one another. Proud supporters of the fight against human trafficking\, LGBTQ community\, and the ongoing battle against cancer\, Well-Known Strangers continue to raise awareness of these important issues through community events and their talents as musicians and artists. \n\nA huge thank you to our sponsors: The Ivy House – https://ivyhousemke.com/The Walker’s Point Association – https://walkerspointassociation.org/MobCraft Beer – https://www.mobcraftbeer.com/Hello Cello – http://www.hellocellomusic.com/Music Review Roulette – https://www.facebook.com/MusicReviewRoulette/414 Films – https://www.414films.com/All Artwork/Promo Material by Steve Vorass – facebook.com/steve.vorass
